Rash
If your child has no fever or a very low fever (<100° ) and feels alright, follow the directions below for home treatment. If he/she feels extreme discomfort, is very sick, has a fever greater than 101 degrees, or if the symptoms suggest an infectious or generalized illness, bring him/her in to our office at once. If the fever is less than 101 degrees, the home care has not helped to dissipate the rash, or if the symptoms start to suggest an infectious or generalized illness, wait a day or two, and bring your child in if needed.
- Stop all medications, especially antibiotics, if they are currently being taken
- Administer Benadryl, by mouth, to help the itch
- You may use hydrocortisone creams on any lesions if no infection is present
- Try to keep your child away from others until the rash has disappeared or has been identified
- If the rash is due to contact with a substance, wash area with soap and water. Then a hydrocortisone cream may be applied
- An over-the-counter anti-fungal medication may be used with fungus-type rashes. However, the rash should be checked within a week if no improvement is observed
- Domeboro solution, an oatmeal bath, or Aveeno bath may offer relief from itch
