Sore Throat
Follow the below instructions if your child has a sore throat but no fever, a normal appetite, clear nasal discharge, and is still active. If he/she has a fever greater than 101° , has difficulty swallowing or breathing, has no cold or cough symptoms, has a rash, has obvious pus pockets in the throat, has had recent exposure to strep throat, is lethargic (extremely drowsy, feels "too tired to move"), has a headache or stiff neck, or is drooling, schedule an appointment with our office immediately. If within forty-eight hours the home care treatment does not work, the child has an ongoing fever less than 101° , has swollen glands or a cough, is still active but has had a sore throat for three or more days and is able to eat or drink fluids without difficulty, schedule an appointment with us.

  1. Administer Tylenol or Advil for pain.
  2. Use an over the counter decongestant, such as Triaminic or Sudafed.
  3. Give your child clear cold fluids or popsicles.
  4. Take your child to our clinic for a strep screen if recent exposure to strep, or if symptoms indicate strep.
  5. Use throat lozenges.
  6. Encourage him/her to rest.
  7. Have him/her gargle with salt water (8 oz. of water to 1/2 tsp of salt).
